Hands, Hearts & Home!!!

Engaging neurodiverse children in play isn’t just fun, it’s a powerful way to support their development, communication, and emotional well-being. The beauty of play is that it meets children where they are. For neurodiverse kids, it’s not just a pastime, it’s a personalized path to growth. We have put together these five fun, hands-on learning activities that you as parents can enjoy with your neurodiverse children right at home. These are designed to spark curiosity, build skills, and honor different learning styles:
🎨 1. DIY Sensory Bottles
These calming tools help with emotional regulation and focus.
The process: Fill a clear plastic bottle with water, glitter, beads, and a drop of food coloring. Seal it tight and let your child shake and watch the contents swirl. You can even theme them, like “ocean calm” or “galaxy swirl.”
🧩 2. Puzzle & Pattern Play
This is great for visual learners and developing problem-solving skills.
The process: Use shape sorters, tangrams, or even homemade puzzles from cut-up cereal boxes. You can also create patterns with colored blocks or beads and have your child replicate or extend them.
🌿 3. Nature Scavenger Hunt
No matter how small your home is, this fun activity will excite your child and you will have many giggles together, can you keep up?. A scavenger hunt encourages movement, sensory input, and observation skills.
The process: Make a simple checklist of things to find in your yard or neighborhood—like a smooth rock, a yellow flower, or something that smells nice. Let your child take the lead and explore at their own pace.
🍳 4. Cooking Together
This is a great way to bond with your child, however let’s be cautious in creating a safe working space for both you and child. Cooking together builds math, reading, and motor skills, all while bonding and you will hopefully have some yummy meals to build your child’s palette.
The process: Choose simple recipes like fruit salad, smoothies, or no-bake cookies. Let your child measure, pour, and mix. The textures and smells also offer rich sensory experiences.
🎭 5. Storytelling with Props
This fun time activity encourages communication, imagination, and emotional expression.
The process: Use puppets, stuffed animals, or even socks to act out stories. You can retell favorite books or make up your own adventures together. These activities are flexible and can be adapted to your child’s interests and sensory preferences.
We would love to get your feedback on how these activities impacted your family time. send us a WhatsApp on +233 59 724 9700 or drop an email info@nsa.edu.gh with the subject NSA Newsletter.\
